Department Overview - Our Department, consisting of seventy-one full-time employees, operates through four primary divisions - Administration, Criminal Investigations, Patrol, and Support Services. The employees in these divisions work together to protect our citizens and to deliver the highest level of service possible to our community. While our employees work from eight to twelve hour shifts, many still volunteer to assist organizations like MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) our Police Explorer’s Post, and our Lunch Buddies Program.
Chief of Police – Rob Hunter, who joined the Police Department in August of 1987 as a patrol officer, was selected as the town’s Police Chief in 1993. He has witnessed the town grow from a population of about 5,500 to more than 26,000, and the police department grow from 17 full-time employees to a current a staff of more than eighty full and part-time employees.
“While all of my direct law enforcement experience has been with the Town of Matthews, I have had the opportunity to meet and work with members of agencies throughout the country. I can state without hesitation that I am serving with the most professional and well-trained staff I know and that we enjoy the shared fortune to be serving the finest community in this state.”
